The Schleicher County ISD board of trustees met Monday, February 10, 2020 and voted to extend administrative contracts to High School Principal Perry Graves, Middle School Principal Ezra Walling and Elementary Principal Michael Rudewick.

Contract extensions were also approved for Athletic Director Michael Johnson, Band Director James Cross, Advanced Academics Coordinator Sharon Spinks, Finance Director Ray Ballew, Technology Director J.D. Doyle, Maintenance Director Oscar Martinez, Transportation Director Joey Jones, and Food Service Director Vikki Cathey.

SCISD Superintendent Robert Gibson advised the board that overall enrollment was 519 on January 31st. That is unchanged from the previous month.

The district’s three principals reported activity on their campuses with all of them noting a slight uptick in the number of absences due to illness. Perhaps the largest impact is being felt on the elementary campus where precautions are being taken to avoid the spread of flu, strep throat and other contagious illnesses. Principal Michael Rudewick reported that water fountains have been turned off and bottled water is being provided students who don’t bring their own.

Even with the impact of flu season, Rudewick noted that attendance on the elementary campus was 92 percent. He added that he expects the tide of illness to ebb after the upcoming long weekend and with the approach of warmer weather.

Finance Director Ray Ballew reported that the district had received a $2.7 million lump sum payment from the Liveoak Wind Farm to offset a lower property tax valuation, along with an annual payment of $213,000. He further noted that 97 percent of taxes have been collected for the year and said that revenue is far ahead of expenses.

Ballew went on to note that the district has $3,515,277 in fund balance, with $2.1 million of that being committed to capital improvement. He further explained that the district has $6,388,211.14 on deposit in a brokerage account with Financial Northeast Securities, Inc., with $2.4 million available to the school in the Gaines County School Land Fund, overseen by Schleicher County on behalf of the school district.

The board approved the minutes of their January 13th meeting and appointed Schleicher County Extension Agent Mark Zoeller as an adjunct faculty member.

Before adjourning, the trustees went behind closed doors for an executive session to discuss the aforementioned administrator and program director contracts. The board returned to open session about 20 minutes later and voted to extend the contracts as recommended by Superintendent Gibson.

Board President Kriss Griffin presided over Monday night’s meeting with trustees Kurtis Homer, Melissa Rodriguez, Glyn Hutto, Holly Griffin and Lupe Sanchez in attendance. Trustee Michael Mertz was absent.

The next meeting of the Schleicher County ISD board of trustees has been rescheduled due to Spring Break and will begin at 6 p.m. on Monday, March 16, 2020 in the SCISD board room.
