The 91st annual meeting of the Mias Amigas Club is slated for Friday and Saturday, June 24-25, 2022. This will be the first time the club has met in person since 2019. Meetings were held remotely in 2020 and 2022, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first meeting and organization of the club took place on the afternoon of June 25, 1931, in the home of Mr. & Mrs. C. C. Doty of Eldorado. Mrs. Josephine Murchison Hill was elected President and Mrs. Ida Connor Neill as Secretary/Treasurer.

The club was composed of girls who spent most of their childhood in or near Eldorado.

Mias Amigas was decided upon as the name of the club, which is Spanish for “My Friends.” The girls spent the next two days recalling stories of their school days and the many happy hours spent together. Dozens of old photographs and yearbooks were dug up and passed around, causing merry laughter as they saw themselves as others saw them.

New pictures were taken in various poses so the girls might have something else to share the next year. Fifteen ladies were present at the first meeting and enjoyed potluck dishes that each had made to share.

The club voted to have the homecoming reunion in Eldorado the last weekend of June each year, with everyone looking forward to the gathering of the “Old Bunch” at the home of Mr.& Mrs. D. C. Hill in June 1932.

Today’s Mias Amigas Club meeting is still held on the last weekend in June, as it has been for the past 91 years. It has grown to include all graduates of Eldorado High School, both girls and guys and their families. These graduates come together each year to share stories, pictures, and reminisce with friends about their school days.

To qualify for membership, you must be a graduate of EHS and have been out of school for twenty years. Many classes hold 5-year or 10-year reunions at other times of the year, however initiation into Mias Amigas is a special privilege and joy only people that spent their school days at EHS can appreciate.

This year’s meeting is special because of a three-year absence of in-person reunions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We will be honoring 20-year classes of 1970, 1971 and 1972 and the 50-year classes of 2000, 2001, and 2002.

Friday June 24th, the sandwich supper and registration begins at 5:30 pm in the high chool cafeteria. Attendees are asked to please bring a picnic food to share. Registration fees are $7 per person for dues and the barbecue tickets are $16 each.

On Saturday June 25th, registration continues with coffee and donuts beginning at 8:30 AM at the high school auditorium with a barbecue lunch following the business meeting. The meal will be catered by Packsaddle Barbecue of San Angelo. The meal can be enjoyed in the cafeteria or in the courtyard.

All the classes inducted into the club will participate in the “Ringing of the Bell”, which takes place at the Schleicher County Courthouse square at 1:30 PM. Pictures will be taken at this time.
