Coach Michael Johnson was the emcee for the 2018 Eldorado Eagles Athletics All Sports Banquet on Monday, May 7th, at the Schleicher County Civic Center. Johnson opened the program by praising the contributions of the Eagles Booster Club during the 2017-18 school year.

Johnson explained that 94 of Eldorado High School’s 138 students participated in sports during the year and represented Eldorado in athletic competitions, with 35 of those athletes going on to advance beyond the district level of competition. And, five of them qualified to compete at the state level in powerlifting and tennis.

Among those striving and achieving while wearing the Kelly Green of Eldorado High School were:

• Cross Country – Regional Qualifier Jose Moya.

• Powerlifting - State Quailifers Marisol DeLuna, Jackie Covarrubiaz and Monica Sanchez. Regional Qualifiers were Albert Arispe, Anthony Olivares, Monica Sanchez, Laura Coronado, Emily Nhek, Marisol DeLuna, Destinny Sandate, Alyssa Sandate, Ashlynn Porter, Sammy Lozano, Jackie Covarrubiaz, Lindy Sanchez.

• Girls Track – Regional Qualifiers were Taylor Emmons, Payton Whitten, Sammy Lozano, Christine Lindsey, Alyssa Sandate, Destinny Sandate and Marisol DeLuna. Area Qualifiers were Taylor Emmons, Payton Whitten, Sammy Lozano, Christine Lindsey, Alyssa Sandate, Destinny Sandate, Hope Barajas, Laura Coronado, Emily Nhek, Marisol DeLuna.

• Boys Track – Regional Qualifiers were Jose Moya, Albert Arispe and Kayden Rodriguez. Area Qualifiers were Jose Moya, Albert Arispe, David Barajas, Aiden Dennis, Kayden Rodriguez, Eric Reyes, Cesar Garcia, Edmundo Garcia and Jaakan Jurecek.

• Tennis – State Qualifiers are Eric Reyes and Andi Morris. Regional Qualifiers were Ryan Farmer, Emmy Arispe, Eric Reyes and Andi Morris.

Coach Johnson presented the Most Valuable and Most Dedicated Players in each sport.

The prestigious Fighting Heart Award went to seniors Taylor Emmons and Clayton Griffin. The award goes to the seniors who exemplify what being an Eagle athlete is all about. Their identity is not measured by wins and losses, but in how they play the game. They are athletes who play multiple sports putting their teammates, coaches and school before themselves.

Other awards included:

• Football – Offensive MVP went to Anthony Olivares; Defensive MVP went to Jack Griffin; Biggest Heart Award went to Jason Fly; Most Outstanding Lineman went to Albert Arispe and Most Dedicated went to Jaaken Jurecek.

• Cross County – MVP went to Jose Moya and Most Dedicated went to Taylor Emmons.

• Girls and Boys Basketball Most Valuable Player went to Taylor Emmons and Eric Reyes; Most Dedicated Player went to Emmie Grace Mynatt and Clayton Griffin.

• Powerlifting: Most Valuable Player went to Marisol DeLuna and Albert Arispe. Most Dedicated went to Monica Sanchez and Frankie Villanueva.

• Track and Field: Most Valuable Player went to Payton Whitten and Albert Arispe. Most Dedicated Player went to Destinny Sandate and Eric Reyes.

• Baseball and Softball: Most Valuable Players went to CJ Covarrubiaz and Cesar Garcia. Most Dedicated went to Jackie Covarrubiaz and Eric Reyes.

• Tennis – Most Valuable Players were Andi Morris and Eric Reyes. Most Dedicated went to Ryan Farmer.

Senior Taylor Emmons presented Destinny Sandate with the Eagle Student Award. Eldorado High School Cheerleaders choose the recipient each year.

Booster Club President Stacy Jurecek presented Ima Bruce with the Eagle Fan of the Year Award.

Jurecek also recognized Schleicher County Medical Center as the Business Supporter of the Year. Vicki Farmer, Director of Nursing, accepted the award on behalf of SCMC.

Jurecek also announced the recipients of $150 Booster Club Scholarship Awards. Receiving the awards were CJ Covarrubiaz, Ryan D. Farmer, Taylor Emmons, Andi Morris, Clayton Griffin and Anthony Olivares.

Coach Johnson concluded the program by saying that a coach once told his father that a school’s athletic program is a billboard for its community. He said that over the years he had found that to be true and he urged the Eldorado Eagles in attendance to be proud of their heritage and to be proud of “the Eagle Way.”
