This is a fairly modern story although it has some historical background. If you consider 1998, a total of 20 years ago, as enough to be historical, then let’s get on with the true story.

The cowboy era, which brings up images of trail drives and things having to do with cattle and life on the range, lasted less than 20 years, but the legacy of that time carries through to today. When I was growing up in Fort Worth I used to drive to the stockyards to pick up sides of beef for my father’s grocery store. Being there made me feel like a cowboy.

Gary Humphreys has a gun shop in Del Rio. He says business is booming (pun intended). Gary is a historian hobbyist and is serious about it. He’ll find some obscure story about a massacre or military operation a few hundred years ago in Val Verde County and go looking for the place where it occurred. A couple of times he has corrected scholars who had put an event in a different location.

Mrs. Forrest has always been a compulsive feeder. Before she retired, she was cooking for the Mule Barn truck stop’s customers, and is singularly responsible for about three flabby tons of avoirdupois on this nation’s truck drivers, and may have been marginally responsible, third-hand, for a cardiac event or two.

Matthew Albert-Duane Sparks, 29, of Austin, has been captured in Midland County and is behind bars there on several outstanding warrants.

“Pomp and Circumstance” was played by the Mighty Eagle Band as 30 members of the Eldorado High School Class of 2018 filed into the Larry Mitchel Stadium on Friday, May 25th, for commencement ceremonies.

A crowd of about 50 people gathered Monday morning at the Eldorado Cemetery to pay tribute to Schleicher County’s war dead as part of the annual Memorial Day observance.

The Eldorado Middle School Awards Program was held Thursday, May 24th in the Eldorado High School auditorium. It began with an opening procession in which each member of the 8th Grade Class of 2018 took a moment to shake the hand of Middle School Principal Ezra Walling.

The Eldorado Elementary Awards Program was held in the Elementary Gym on Thursday, May 24th. Clean Up Eldorado Awards were announced and went to 2nd Grader Jimena Sanchez, 3rd grader Mario Guanajuato and 4th grader Jaxon Hight.

Schleicher County ISD honored its staff with a meal for the 21st consecutive year, this time with a Staff Appreciation Breakfast in the school cafeteria on Friday May 25th.

Matthew Albert-Duane Sparks, has been captured in Midland County and is behind bars there on several outstanding warrants.

Rudy Franco and Arthur Urbanski were recognized Tuesday by members of the Schleicher County EMS for their heroic efforts in saving the life of Javier Elias Garcia after he suffered a heart attack on April 23, 2018.

Austin Albin will deliver the valedictory address and Anthony Olivares will give the salutatory address Friday night as friends and family members gather in Larry Mitchel Stadium to watch 30 members of the EHS class of 2018 graduate from high school.

Schleicher County authorities are seeking information concerning the whereabouts of Matthew Albert-Duane Sparks, 29, of Austin, after he escaped custody here on Thursday, March 17th and managed to avoid being captured despite the fact that he was handcuffed as he fled in the dark.

Band honors were given on May 7th Spring Concert for 5th-6th Grades and 7th - High School, on May 10th by Band Director Scott Boswick and assistant band director Justina Sanders.

Schleicher County Justice of the Peace Phil Edmiston reported last week that he had received a toxicology report back on Jaime Adrian Ocegueda a California man killed March 21st in a head-on collision with a sand truck in east of Eldorado.

In the previous tales I have told how I came to know and work Tirso Delgado. After the contract with the U.S. Border Patrol was over, Tirso came back to work for me in Pecos County. I have to assume that after he assisted the patrol, they left him alone for the next few years.
