Several reports of a possible telephone scam have been made involving people identifying themselves as being from Texas Health and Human Services (HHS). One such incident was reported to The Eldorado Success on Thursday, July 23 by Denese Capps who said caller ID indicated the SCAM call was made from Anson in the 325 area code.

Capps said the caller indicated they were with HHS and tried to get her to reveal her date of birth, before she disconnected the call.

HHS is not the only agency warning about such scam calls. The agency urges people to protect themselves from phone scams by doing the following:

• If a caller says he or she is from a bank, insurance company or state agency and asks for personal information or money, do not provide it. Hang up immediately.

• If the call may have been legitimate, call the organization back using a number you trust. Do not use the number that you received the call from.

• Report suspected scams to local law enforcement, the organization the caller claimed to be from, or the Federal Trade Commission.

• More information about phone scams and how to handle them can be found on the Federal Trade Commission website.
