Emiliano “Big E” Hernandez was named to the Associated Press 2A All-State Football Team as a First-Team Offensive Lineman.

Also earning post-season honors were senior quarterback Kevan Covarrubiaz and his brother, sophomore receiver Korbin Covarrubiaz, each of whom were named to the Honorable Mention 2A All-State offensive team.

Hernandez, a senior, anchored the Eagles offensive and defensive lines during the 2019 season, but he caught the attention of Associated Press editors for his play on the O-line. Hernandez graded out a 97 percent during the 2019 campaign. He tallied 41 pancake blocks, 34 knockdowns, 23 cut blocks and allowed no quarterback sacks.

Defensively, Hernandez counted for 60 total tackles on the season, including eight tackles for loss. He also caused a fumble and recovered another for the Warbirds.

Kevan Covarrubiaz returned to lead the Eagles offense after suffering back-to-back season ending knee injuries during his sophomore and junior years. In 2019, he led the Eagles to a 10-win season for only the third time in school history. The Eagles finished the year with a 10-2 record, a District 8-2A Championship and a Bi-District Championship. Kevan Covarrubiaz completed 144 of 258 passes for 2,533 yards and 22 touchdowns. He also carried the ball 132 times for 701 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Korbin Covarrubiaz earned a rare All-State mention in only his sophomore year. He caught 42 passes of 831 yards and nine touchdowns. He also carried the ball nine times for 90 yards and a touchdown and saw limited duty at quarterback where he completed six of nine passes for 66 yards and a TD.

On the defensive side of the ball, Korbin Covarrubiaz tallied 45 total tackles, including three for loss. He also intercepted two passes and returned them for a total of 35 yards.

Eagles Head Coach Michael Johnson was excited about the awards. “I am extremely proud of these athletes receiving these awards. Like I have said before, awards like that come from the results of a great team,” Johnson said. “These three have worked very hard and done what it takes to earn an award like this. It’s a great honor for them, their team, and the City of Gold!”
