Texas DPS Sergeant Justin Baker at 6 pm on Friday, May 15, 2020, issued the following statement concerning the shooting death of Weldon Reed (Donny) Leek on a ranch in eastern Schleicher County on Thursday, May 14th:

On Wednesday, May 13, 2020, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) was called to assist the Schleicher County Sheriff’s Office with an incident involving an armed subject who had barricaded himself inside his residence. The suspect involved in this altercation was wanted for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon after firing multiple rounds from an assault rifle at his parents. The suspect’s parents were able to seek cover in a nearby field where they later met with local law enforcement officers.

Once the arrest warrant was obtained, law enforcement officers attempted negotiations with the subject — these negotiations lasted throughout the night. After approximately 16 hours of failed negotiations, the suspect fired at law enforcement officers when they attempted to serve him with the outstanding warrant. Officers returned fire, and the suspect was killed.

This remains an active, ongoing investigation with the Texas Rangers, and no additional information is available at this time.
