Schleicher County Commissioners met Monday, February 10th and heard from County Treasurer Jennifer Henderson who told them about the winding path a $3.4 million check took on its way to Tax Assessor-Collector Vanessa Covarrubiaz’s office.

The check for the payment of property taxes on the Liveoak Wind Farm, took several days before arriving in Eldorado, despite having been postmarked on January 31st.

After a stop in Abilene, the check finally made its way to Eldorado on Friday, February 7th where the bulk of its proceeds were directed into the accounts of Schleicher County and the Schleicher County Hospital District. Smaller portions went to Schleicher County ISD and the Plateau Underground Water District.

The money represents the first property tax payments made by the multi-million dollar wind farm .

Among other business, the commissioners approved a retainer payment for a law firm to help with the redistricting process following the 2020 Census. A law firm has yet to be chosen.

It was explained that once the census information is received, precinct lines may have to be redrawn if the population has shifted significantly within the county.

The commissioners also approved a memorandum of understanding with the American Red Cross and Schleicher County Emergency Management. A solid waste grant from the Concho Valley Council of Governments was also approved.

County Treasurer Jennifer Henderson informed the commissioners that a $100,000 fund has been set up for repairs to the Memorial Building. The commissioners court suggested using the funds to purchase air conditioning and heating units for climate control in the south basement room where county records are stored.

Replacing the Memorial Building’s roof was also discussed, but no action was taken on the matter.

County Judge Charlie Bradley told the commissioners that a pavement program for the airport will be on the next agenda.

Judge Bradley presided over Monday’s meeting with Commissioners Johnny Mayo, Steve Nelson, Kirk Griffin and Chris Meador in attendance.

The next meeting of the Schleicher County Commissioners Court is slated for 6 p.m. on Monday, February 24, 2020, in the first floor meeting room of the county courthouse.
