Noweita D. (Matthews) Briggs, 85, of Brady, Texas, and formerly a longtime Eldorado, Texas, resident, passed away Monday, March 31, 2014, in Brady. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2014, at Eldorado Cemetery with Gary Price officiating.

Noweita was born in Eldorado, Texas on September 15, 1928, to Herman Hensel Matthews and Delta (Booth) Matthews. Other than her college years and living in New Mexico from 1963 to 1975, she was a lifelong Eldorado resident. She had only moved to Brady two years ago when she went into a nursing facility. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Noweita came from a large ranching family and loved the land and loved the ranch she lived on. Anytime there were goats, sheep or cattle to be worked, she made it into a big event and looked forward to it. She loved wildflowers and tending her flower gardens.

Noweita’s love of animals led her to never turn away a stray cat, and she enjoyed every one that came up. She also enjoyed reading and had a love of opera music.

Noweita was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Hensel Harvey Matthews.

She is survived by cousin, Carl Matthews, and wife Pat, of Farmington, New Mexico and numerous other cousins.

Memorial may be made to the Eldorado Women’s Club Scholarship or the Alzheimer’s Association.
