The Eldorado Eagles opened their 2010 season Friday night with a 33-0 win over the Gorman Panthers.
Senior tailback Rudy Sanchez scored two touchdowns and gained 243 yards on 19 carries to lead the Eagles offensive attack. Sanchez put a punctuation mark on the affair with a 62-yard TD run in the 4th to seal the deal for the Warbirds.
The Panthers won the opening coin toss and deferred their choice until the second half, effectively putting their defense on the field first. The Eagles took the opening kickoff and drove the length of the field. Senior fullback Anthony Mata pounded the ball in from 6 yards out with 11:01 left in the opening stanza. The PAT failed and Eldorado took an early 6-0 lead.
And, the early lead proved to be one the Eagles would not relinquish, as the Eagles defense stepped up and shut down Gorman's offense. The Panthers gained only five first downs on the evening as Eldorado defenders swarmed to the ball.
Nathan Jimenez, a junior, led the defensive surge with five solo tackles and five assists. Senior linebackers Josh Jurecek and Miles Mikeska also played well, tallying 14 tackles and assists between them. Anthony Mata and sophomore Eric Estrada each had five tackles and assists. Estrada tallied the Eagles only quarterback sack of the night when he dropped the Panthers' signal caller for a three yard loss.
Eagles quarterback Jaymie O'Harrow had a good outing. He connected with Nathan Jimenez for a 13 yard gain and went one of three on the night. He controlled the tempo of the game and kept Gorman's defenders guessing with fake handoffs and effective ball handling.
Rudy Sanchez counted for two Eldorado touchdowns while sophomore tailback Rico Martinez counted for two more. Anthony Mata scored the Eagles only other touchdown on the opening drive. Meanwhile, sophomore kicker Hector Reyes was three of four on extra points. The Eagles failed on a two-point conversion attempt late in the first quarter.
The win sets the Eagles at 1-0 on the season, the same as all the other teams in District 13-1A. The Reagan County Owls defeated the Miles Bulldogs 29-26 on Thursday night in San Angelo Stadium. It was the first game of 2010 season played in the Concho Valley.
Meanwhile, The Winters Blizzards defeated the Coleman Bluecats 19-14, Mason beat Harper 28-12, and the defending State Champion Goldthwaite Eagles defeated Thrall 41-3.
The Eldorado Eagles will next face the Irion County Hornets in Mertzon. The Hornets lost 45-0 to Roby on Friday night.
