YFZ Watch Tower?

The tower pictured above continues to rise at YFZ Ranch. There has been much speculation about the purpose of the tower. Windows that appear to spiral up the tower walls indicate to some that it will not be used for a water tower. Others suggest a watch tower as outlined in Mormon scripture.    PHOTO BY KATHY MANKIN

Eagles roll past TLCA 50-0

Friday, 16 September 2011 12:22

The Eldorado Eagles rushed for more than 400 yards as they ran over, around and through the TLCA Eagles last Friday night on the way to a 50--0 victory in Lakeview Stadium in San Angelo.

The Eagles lost the opening coin toss and put their defense on the field first. It really wouldn’t matter, however, as the Warbirds defense was just as dominating as the offensive unit, holding the boys from the Texas Leadership Charter Academy managed only 34 total yards on the night.

Rico Martinez was Eldorado’ leading rusher with 148 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. Blaine Mitchell wasn’t far behind with 138 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries.

Eldorado’s scores came early and in bunches as Warbirds offensive line opened gaping holes in the TLCA defensive front.

Blaine Mitchell scored from 10 yards out to open the scoring. He would score again on a 40-yard run, followed by a 38-yard TD run from Rico Martinez, all  before the opening period expired.

As the two teams switched ends of the field Eldorado held a 21-0 lead.

The story was much the same through the 2nd and 3rd quarters as the Eagles kept their foot on the gas until the game was well out of reach of TLCA.

Rico Martinez scored again in the 2nd period, rushing in from 19 yards out.

The defense got its first score of the night when  Domingo Torres scooped up a fumble and rumbled 64 yards for a touchdown. Hector Reyes added his fifth extra-point of the night and Eldorado led 35-0 at the intermission.

The Eagles didn’t seem to have lost a step when the came out for the second half. They moved the ball down the field smartly and Blaine Mitchell carried it in from one yard out for the sixth touchdown of the night.

Hector Reyes missed his only extra-point of the night  and the Eagles held a 41-0 lead.

The defense got into the action again when Lane Griffin trapped the TLCA quarterback in the endzone and brought him down for a safety, making the score 43-0.

Eldorado wasn’t finished, however as Blaine Mitchell connected with Ruben Vasquez for a 25-yard pass and catch for a touchdown. Reyes again booted the ball through the uprights for the point-after and the Eagles took a 50-0 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter.

That’s when the Warbirds dialed down the offense and took time off the clock. The 50-0 score would be the final and Eldorado got its second win of the season.

Besides the 286 yards rushing Martinez and Mitchell gained, Domingo Torres gained 64, Jackson O’Harrow carried for 49 and Tres Whitten gained 15.

Mitchell completed four of his eight passes for 86 yards and a TD. That went to Vazquez who caught another pass for a total of 46 yards. Hector Rios caught two of his own for 40 yards.

The Eagles now prepare to travel to Bronte to take on the Longhorns who are coming off a bye week after a 34-0 win over Roby. The Longhorns earlier defeated Junction 49-19 in the first week of the season.

Eagles fans are encouraged to make the trip and support the Eagles. Those who cannot attend can listen as Mason Vaughan and Kerry Joy bring you the play-by-play in a live broadcast to KLDE 104.9 FM.
