EHS tracksters compete at Regional
 Eldorado track athletes competed at the Region 1-1A Track and Field Meet held at South Plains College in Levelland on Friday and Saturday, April 27th and 28th. High schools from Marfa to Canadian were represented.
A front blew in from the west on Friday morning, with 30-45 mph winds kicking up dust and dealing misery to track meet participants and spectators as the running prelims were held. On Saturday the weather turned out to be perfect with a clear blue sky and much lighter winds.
EMS hosts annual Invitational Tennis Meet
Junior high tennis teams from Sonora, Ozona, Irion County, Christoval, Reagan County and Eldorado participated in the Eldorado Invitational Tournament held Saturday, April 21st. The meet started at 8 a.m. with 120 matches played.
Eldorado’s 8th grade mixed doubles teams claimed the top three spots with Sutairra Martinez and Strait Pridemore claiming 1st Place. The 2nd place team was Danielle Sims and Justin “J.O.” Ochoa. Jose Guerra and Marinda Villanueva finished 3rd.
Kaitlyn Lindsey and Patricia Patino placed 3rd in 8th grade girls doubles.
The 8th grade boys doubles team Justin Whitten and Jesus DeLuna placed 2nd.
Branda Gail Arispe placed 1st in 7th grade girls singles while Katya Gonzalez claimed consolation.
7th grade boys singles player Victor Castro also won in the consolation round.
The 7th grade boys doubles team of Jess Gonzales and Hudson Martin placed 2nd while Noah Sorrels and Clayton Arendt claimed the consolation spot.
Coach Randy Mitchel commented after the meet that a number of other young Eagles players competed well but did not place. She said with continued hard work she expects the group to bring home more hardware from the Reagan County Middle School meet on April 28th.
The coach noted that Marcos Ramon played singles for the first time and improved and learned a lot during each game. Elizabeth Griffin also played singles and gained more experience. Will Mynatt and Luis Miguel Martinez played some very tough doubles opponents. They will be seeking revenge this week.
Leonardo Castro and Fabian Gomez were eliminated by their teammates but the coach notes that if they continue to practice hard the team has a chance of placing this weekend.
Meanwhile, Kyler Wilha and Eric Sanchez played together for the first time and gained lots of experience as did Jaxon Sheppard and Jesus Dominguez.
Rafael Ruezga and Davis Hutto also played doubles together for the first time. Deonn Fuentes and Sasha Sanchez played mixed doubles and hope to improve as they go into district.
The Middle School Tennis teams travel to Big Lake for their invitational tennis tournament Saturday, April 28.
Eagles nine end season in J-City
The Eldorado Eagles baseball team moved into their final week of the season with a chance of winning out and vying for a spot in the playoffs. They improved their chances on Tuesday, April 17th with a 17-4 victory over the Medina Bobcats. However, things went south on a road trip to the east when the Warbirds lost 10-0 to Center Point on Friday, April 20th and 9-2 to the Johnson City Eagles on Saturday, April 21st.
Hector Reyes was on the mound for the Eagles as they hosted Medina. He held the Bobcats scoreless in the top of the first inning.
The Eagles then gave Reyes all the run support he would need as nine runners crossed home plate in the bottom of the first stanza.
Edward Hernandez led off for the Warbirds and reached on a single. He then stole second and came home when Jacob Sanchez singled.
Reyes was up next and was awarded first after being hit by a pitch. That sent Sanchez to second, but he wouldn’t stay there long as he stole third.
Rico Martinez then drove a triple deep bringing home Sanchez and Reyes.
Domingo Torres walked and there were runners at the corners when Ruben Vazquez came to bat and hammered a single through the infield. That brought Martinez home.
Will Barker then drove a triple to the fence to plate Torres and Vazquez. Tres Whitten was up next. He singled to drive Barker home. Whitten then stole second and third before pulling off a rare steal of home.
Allen Espinosa then flied out to right center to record the Eagles first out of the game.
Hernandez was hit by a pitch and reached base for the second time in the inning. He stole second and went to third when Reyes sacrificed to deep center field. Hernandez, not to be outdone by Whitten, then stole home to record the Eagles ninth run of the inning.
Martinez then grounded out to first to end the inning for the Eagles.
Eldorado would tally eight more runs in the game while holding Medina to only four.
The next game, held last Friday in Center Point would end the Eagles chances at a playoff berth as the Pirates claimed a 10-0 win.
The Warbirds season ended the next day in Johnson City where they lost 9-2 to the defending state champion Johnson City Eagles.

Expand the trophy case! EHS scholars, actors, athletes bring home bevy of awards
 Spring is a particularly busy time of year, especially for those EHS students competing in One-Act-Play, Academic UIL, Track, Softball, Baseball or Golf. And, several of the gifted students are competing in more than one event.
Already this season, Marissa Gonzales won a Silver Medal at the State Powerlifting Meet in Corpus Christi. Meanwhile, Edward Hernandez advanced to the boys State Powerlifting Meet in Abilene where he competed on March 24th.
Superintendent Billy Collins expressed pride in the students. “It speaks highly of a school when so many of its student athletes advance so far in so many various fields. Not to mention that several of these kids are competing in multiple contests. I’m proud of them all!”
ON THE STAGE
On the stage, Eldorado’s One-Act Play entry “And They Dance Real Slow in Jackson,” continues to wow the judges. Robin Hibbs was named Best Actress and Alex McMayon and Austin Stapp were named to the All-Star Cast as the play advanced from the Area Contest held Saturday, April 14, 2012 in Crane.
Outstanding Crew Awards went to Esme Ruezga, Stormi Rhinehart and Jessica Gonzalez. Honorable Mention Cast awards went to Christian Sanchez and Ryan Espinosa.
The play is directed by Luann Shipman. Individual cast and crew members include: Robin Hibbs, Austin Stapp, Ashley Mettlen, Ryan Espinosa, Christian Sanchez, Cody McCormack, Alex McMayon, Madison Albin, Whitney Perez, Amber Shipman, Esme Ruezga, Jessica Gonzalez, and Stormi Rinehart.
The cast and crew will present the play next at the Region 1A Contest slated April 20 on the campus of South Plains College in Levelland. There the play will compete with Irion County High School, “A Streetcar Named Desire,” Plains High School, “Henry Lumper,” Ropes High School, “Leading Ladies,” Hale Center High School, “Sending Down the Sparrows,” and Stratford High School, “Moon Over Buffalo.”
ON THE TRACK
On April 13th Eldorado High School Track team advanced top four in each event. Seven boys and six girls will advance to the South Plains Regional Track Meet in Levelland, April 27th and 28.
Varsity boys advancing are: Lane Griffin in the 100 M. Dash and 800 M. Relay: Evan Joiner 400 M. Dash and 1600 M. Relay; Dylan Ramos High Jump and 800 M. Relay; Roman Medrano 800 and 1600 M. Relays; Brian Parsley 1600 M. Relay; Diego Sanchez Shot Put, Blaine Mitchell Long Jump, 200 M. Dash and 1600 M. Relay.
Varsity Girls advancing are: Abby Fuentes 200 M Run, 400 and 800 M Relays; McKenzie McAngus Pole Vault and 800 M. Relay; Brianda Torres 100 M Dash, Long Jump, 400 and 800 M. Relays; Kiarra Trevino 200 M Dash, 400 and 800 M. Relays; Miranda Arispe 400 M. Relay and Valeria Ortiz 3200 M. Run.
IN THE CLASSROOM
Eldorado will advance 14 students in UIL Academics on April 19th and 20th.

ON THE DIAMOND
The Eldorado Lady Eagles softball team clinched the District 2-1A Championship last week and will be headed into the playoffs. Their playoff opponents are yet to be determined.
Meanwhile, the Eldorado Eagles baseball team entered the week with an opportunity to win out and vie for a playoff berth.

The Eldorado Eagles boys golf team placed 3rd at the Regional tournament in Lubbock on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, just one spot shy of advancing to State.
Lane Griffin was the leading scorer for the Eagles Individually, he placed third, a single stroke out contention for a berth in the State tournament.
