Tom grew up in Schleicher County, Texas and graduated Eldorado High School in 1945.  He was inducted into the army July 26, 1945 and served a tour of duty in Korea with the 54th Transportation Corps as a Tec 5 at the close of World War II.  After his honorable discharge January 20, 1947, Tom returned to Eldorado where he and his brother Holvey entered into the business of chemical eradication of cactus, mesquite and bitterweed.  Some of their formulations were used for many years in the county controlling these plants.

Tom later moved to Midland where for thirteen years he was active in the oilfield chemical and drilling mud business.  It was there Tom met Margie Graham, a bookkeeper for a drilling mud company.  They were married on September 14, 1962.  In 1964, Tom and Margie formed Specialty Research and Sales, Inc.

During his research for better and more useful oilfield chemicals,        Tom formulated a sealant, used in sealing leaks in earthen tanks, ponds, pits and underground concrete conduits as well as irrigation ditches.  The chemical was used by farmers and ranchers as well as being used later as a sealant in porous zones while drilling for oil and gas.  For this product, Tom was granted a U.S. Patent.  Specialty Research , Inc. became a wholly owned subsidiary of Tom Brown, Inc., a Midland based oil and gas producing company.  Tom remained President and Director of Specialty Research, Inc. while Margie served as an officer of the chemical company until his retirement.
After retiring, Tom and Margie moved to Schleicher County and purchased land west of Eldorado.  Margie died November 6, 2002.
