Woman’s Club welcomes special guests to Eldorado

The Eldorado Woman’s Club met Tuesday, March  9, 2010 at 2:30 p.m. in the Methodist annex for our regular meeting. President Myrt Williams welcomed members and special guests. Jere Holley gave our opening prayer.

 

TDA offers funds for young farmers to start, expand operations

AUSTIN — In an effort to assist with the challenges associated with starting or expanding a farming or ranching operation in Texas, Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples today announced the availability of an additional $100,000 in grants through the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Young Farmer Grant Program. The program, which has already awarded $100,000 to 13 eligible farmers this year, is designed to help young farmers enter or enhance a production agriculture career.

 

Recycle that old cell phone

(SPM Wire)  Some let their old, unused mobile phones gather dust, while others throw them away. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has a smarter alternative.

As part of its e-Cycling partnership with mobile phone manufacturers, retailers, and service providers, the EPA is encouraging phone recycling through store returns, drop-offs, and online trade-ins. With only ten percent of phones currently being recycled, the program could make a big difference.

2 YFZ Ranch men sentenced for sexual assault, bigamy

AUSTIN — The 51st State District Court in Tom Green County on April 15 sentenced Lehi Barlow Jeffs of Eldorado to eight years in prison for sexually assaulting a child.
The court, in San Angelo, rendered its prison sentence after the defendant entered a plea and the judge found that the defendant perpetrated both sexual assault and bigamy.
The court also sentenced Michael George Emack of Eldorado to seven years in prison for violating Texas bigamy laws. The sentence will run concurrently with the seven-year sentence he received in January for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl.

Twelve YFZ Ranch defendants have been indicted on sexual assault of a child, bigamy or other charges; five defendants have been convicted on felony charges and sentenced to prison; the other seven defendants are awaiting trial.

 

Lehrmann wins in GOP runoff

Debra Lehrmann won a narrow victory over Rick Green in the runoff race for the Republican nomination for the Texas Supreme Court Justice, Place 3.
Lehrmann received just over 51 percent of the vote which mirrors her results in Schleicher County where she received 22 votes to Green’s 19. Lehrmann will now face Democratic nominee Jim Sharp in the November General Election.

 

Council eyes USDA funding for water tower

USDA rural development specialist Randy Verner of Ozona spoke Monday evening with the Eldorado City Council concerning the possible federal funding for the purchase of new landfill equipment and perhaps even a new water tower.
Verner provided City Secretary Carolyn Mayo an applications to apply for funds for equipment and construction.
Utility Superintendent Floyd Fay reported that his crews repaired two major water leaks in recent days. Fay advised the council that a new landfill inspector with the  Texas Commission on Environmental  Quality  (TCEQ) made a surprise visit to the city landfill recently. He said the inspector cited the city for windblown trash and inadequate cover.
