by Dr. Jim Brame The highly successful Wellness Center is again honored by an additional grant in the amount of $3,000.00 from BlueCross/BlueShield of Texas. The total funding received from BC/BSTX is $10,000.00 since the community-wide effort to build the Center was begun in several years ago. To date, the donations from individuals and businesses as well as multiple grants have been enough for the construction of the fully equipped facility. Operation of the Center is provided primarily by membership fees from community users. The highly functional Physical Therapy unit, as part of the facility, is operated by the Hospital.
AUSTIN — Working the land has been a family tradition for generations of Texans. To honor this longstanding Texas custom, Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples recently recognized 91 farms and ranches, spanning 66 Texas counties, at the 35th Annual Family Land Heritage (FLH) ceremony.
Forked W Ranch in Schleicher County was among the properties honored. Betty Sue and Susan McAlpine were on hand to accept the honor on behalf of the ranch.
The ceremony, held in the Senate Chamber at the Texas State Capitol, recognized families who have kept their farms and ranches in continuous agricultural production for 100 years or more.
The Schleicher County Appraisal Review Board (ARB) met Thursday, July 1st to consider a request for a religious exemption from property taxes on the YFZ Ranch temple and meeting hall. The board ultimately tabled the matter, and delayed taking action until the United Order of Texas trust receives a 501(d) designation it is seeking from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.
Chief Appraiser Jani Mitchell previously denied three 2009 applications under advisement of the district’s attorneys. Each time the application was made it was under a different trust name.
Mitchell’s last denial was appealed to the ARB which consists of three members appointed by Schleicher County Appraisal District’s board of directors. The three members are Kerry Joy, Jim Chancellor and Jennifer Henderson.
The Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC) today chose a route for a new 345-kilovolt transmission line project intended to carry renewable wind power through Schleicher, Irion and Tom Green counties to more populated areas of the state.
LCRA Transmission Services Corporation (LCRA TSC) will build the 38-mile line west and south of San Angelo. The line, known as Twin Buttes to McCamey D, is part of an effort mandated by the Texas Legislature to allow for reliable and cost-effective delivery of power produced from areas in West Texas and the Panhandle, called Competitive Renewable Energy Zones (CREZ), to homes and businesses in areas of high energy demand throughout the state.
Post season honors continued this month for the Eldorado Lady Eagles Softball team when Amy Alvizo was selected as one of only two pitchers for the San Angelo Standard Times All-West Texas Softball Team.
Alvizo, heading into her senior year for the 2010-2011 school year, was instrumental in guiding the Lady Eagles softball team from the pitcher’s ring with 14 wins and 5 losses for the 2009 - 2010 season. She captured 2nd team All-District honors in a highly competitive district that featured the back-to-back State Champion Lady Buffaloes of Forsan.
COLLEGE STATION - William “Frank” Edmiston, a finance major at Texas A & M University, recently began a summer 2010 internship in Washington, D.C. Frank will spend the summer as an integral part of the State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration.
Frank is one of seventeen students selected for a policy internship through the Public Policy internship Program (PPIP) at Texas A & M University. Frank’s duties include monitoring legislation, attending hearings and briefings, preparing reports, and researching policy issues for senior staff members. Frank is the son of William and Darlene Edmiston and the grandson of Frances Edmiston.
