EHS students win big in Stock Market Game

Eldorado High School finished first and second overall in this past semester’s Stock Market Game for the West-Central region of Texas.

The Stock Market Game is sponsored by the Texas Council on Economics Education and consists of a 10-week period when teams from all over the world compete by investing in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds with real-time pricing and actual exchange between team members and the stock market.

Each team starts with $100,000 in a virtual portfolio and spends the next 10 weeks buying and selling securities in an attempt to grow the portfolio. Each trade is charged a 2 percent commission in order to be as realistic as possible.

 

Commissoners consider grant applications

Schleicher County Commissioners heard Monday from engineer Tom Brown who informed them that it is time to apply for a Colonia Grant to replace septic systems in the Edgefield and Three Sisters additions.

Brown said grant applications are due in March. He said he would bring more information on the matter to a future meeting and no formal action was taken.

Brown also updated the commissioners on a $35,000 grant application through AEP which, if successful, would provide matching funds for a larger grant through from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Schleicher County’s top taxpayers listed

Schleicher County’s taxable values grew this year to more than $783 million, according to Chief Appraiser Jani Mitchell. That amount compares to last year’s total of $690 million in taxable value.

HighMount Exploration and Production, L.L.C. remains atop the taxpayer list in Schleicher County with a taxable value of $57.3 million. That’s up nearly $20 million over last year but still significantly lower than two years ago when the company’s taxable value topped $76 million.

 

Trustees Extend Superintendent Contract

The SCISD board of trustees voted Monday night to extend Superintendent Billy Collins’ contract. The decision came following a lengthy  executive session during which the board conducted their annual superintendent’s evaluation. The final vote on Collins’ new contract will be held at the board’s next meeting on February 7th.

Collins is completing his fifth year as SCISD superintendent. He said after the meeting that he and his family enjoy living in Eldorado and that he was pleased with the board’s decision to keep him around a little longer.

In other business, the board also voted to contract with T4C Construction of San Angelo to build a new home for the district. A site for the new home has yet to be determined. The price tag for the project has yet to be finalized but the board set a cap of $160,000.
